Dressage Sabbatical A Year of Classical Riding at Lost Hollow Farm is the enthralling tale of a young equestrian's true challenge of a lifetime. Rose Caslar, a highly experienced rider and trainer across disciplines, arrives for her year-long internship at American classical master Paul Belasik's Pennsylvania Riding Academy only to find she has to put aside everything she knows and basically start completely over. Beginning with the very thing that she was sure she had mastered...her position! Rose is courageous, honest and open as she writes about her journey, sweeping her readers along in her daily activities, adventures and private thoughts. We learn about the tremendous workload of a top equestrian training facility, which is not for the faint of heart. And neither are the weekly lessons with the sometimes mysterious Belasik who always encourages Rose to find the right questions to ask and gives nothing away. As the months pass, we enjoy many technical discussions of training methodology, much self-evaluation, and stories of struggle, breakthrough and progress that happily begins to snowball as time passes. Raised a true outdoors woman, Rose makes time to note the change of the seasons, describing the beauty of the countryside in all of its natural glory. Her descriptions of the weekly gourmet "barn dinners" will reflexively send you to your own kitchen to forage for for a glass of wine and something scrumptious to eat. Rose voices the thoughts and fears, hopes and dreams we've all experienced at some point in our lives in our quest to become better horsemen, the thoughts that we rarely voice to anyone and not often to ourselves. In the end, we realize by her example that if, like Rose, we persevere and we work hard, anything is possible.

I am not a rider. To state this as clearly as possible: I have successfully avoided sitting atop a horse since 1964. I do have friends that ride, however – from Dressage all the way to Western -- which is how I twigged onto this book. I know that riders who read this will appreciate my words, but this review is mainly intended for non-riders.The book is what I look for in non-fiction. It’s technical, logical, and with the author’s own theories presented and defended (i.e., “fractionality.”) Through lyrical prose, the book takes me deep into an interest that, on my own, I could not fathom. And in a fascinating way, the book relates each piece of the Dressage process, page by page, to my own interests and challenges.
The book is introspective but the author is not self-absorbed. The book is slow, but not plodding (no pun intended!) It’s slow in the sense that any process well explained is always step-by-step, unhurried, and without short-cuts. And although some of the steps are small, the pace of this book is steadily forward. As the author works out her own questions re Dressage, I was easily able to apply her learning and insights to myself as I approach fitness, parenting, and even my behavior in the workplace. In fact, I would recommend this book as part of an in-depth executive training seminar. Yes, think of a huge horse with a mind of its own as the workforce. But keep in mind that all the lessons in this book are intended for the rider, not the horse. The lessons are about goals and respect, humility and confidence, training and discipline. (Now let’s get out there and produce results. With style!)
One note: I recommended this book to a corporate trainer just this morning.
And an additional note: If you think you’re physically fit, this book will make you think again about that!

Dressage Sabbatical A Year of Classical Riding at Lost Hollow Farm eBook Rose Caslar Paul Belasik Reviews
It is incredibly annoying that this book is not available in a format for Paperwhite. There is no reason that it could not be (as far as I can tell half way through the book).
That said, I'm enjoying the writer's reflections on training with Paul Belasik and his team. There is much here for the serious dressage rider to consider and apply to their own riding and training.
Loved the details of everyday work endured on a horse facility.
A wonderful book--couldn't put it down. Love the detailed descriptions of the body work, use of the back and seat. A must read for all serious dressage riders, regardless of their experience level. It is also very inspiring--the attention to detail at the barn re grooming, care, tack, neatness. Just a wonderful, wonderful book. Helped me realize that I am not alone in my insistence that attention to detail and small daily practices matter.
I feel very fortunate to have come upon this book at the same time that I returned to riding, after a 40 year break, and discovered dressage. As I began learning many new things it was heartening to see the parallels between my novice experiences and that of a seasoned ride Rose Caslar. A lesson well worth noting, that the process is ongoing, fascinating and exciting (and sometime frustrating and challenging).
Rose tells her story with a balance of detail, self-awareness and humor. To the individual issues of a particular horse to the expansive discussion of dressage history, the inclusion of all the great reference material and, of courses the menus! The writing is excellent and makes for smooth and engaged reading.
Thank you Rose.
This was a remarkably different book regarding the fine art of dressage training. To begin with, I found it quite helpful to understand that someone else has traveled my journey of questioning the process and trying to knit pick the feel. I too ride a sensitive mare and it was nice to know that we aren't the only ones with "issues". Rose writes in such an understanding way that you feel like you are right beside her for the entire journey. You experience the highs and lows and can't wait to get out and ride your own horse. I feel like I have a better understanding of how to use my seat and back after this read. To me, I couldn't ask for more out of a book. I was entertained and I increased my knowledge bank. Brilliant!
Anticipating the usual heavy reading dressage book, I was overjoyed to find myself reading Dressage Sabbatical as if it were a fast paced novel that I couldn't put down. Ms.Caslar's clarity, honesty, vulnerability, openness and humility are rather unique in dressage literature. Perhaps because she was writing this as a blog for friends initially, the reader is treated to a level of intimacy that is as refreshing as it is educational. Whether one is a dressage aficionado who will be nodding their head in recognition and remembrance, or a novice ingenue who will need paper and pen at hand to take notes and highlight almost every page, Ms. Caslar brings a background and knowledge base that allows her to provide descriptions and explanations that are fresh, insightful, sensitive and provide a felt level of understanding. Whether one agrees with Mr. Belasik's training methods and the practical results they achieve or not, this book is a very, VERY welcome addition to anyone's dressage library.
